DICTATORS’ FAVOURITE FOODS
Authors Victoria Clark and Melissa Scott revealed the eating habits and favourite food items of dictators in their recently published book Dictators' Dinners: A Bad Taste Guide to Entertaining Tyrants. Here is a look at which foods various infamous tyrants craved.
ADOLF HITLER
Hitler was said to suffer from chronic flatulence, which may have inspired his becoming a vegetarian. In an interview, Margot Woelk, one of Hitler’s 15 food testers, claimed the Fuhrer favoured vegetables - particularly asparagus and bell peppers - with a side of rice or pasta.
KIM JONG-IL
Fujimoto Kenji, sushi chef to the North Korean leader, revealed that Kim Jong Il enjoyed shark fin, which he served several times a week.
NICOLAE CEAUSESCU
Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu preferred to go back to his roots by favouring a country stew made with a whole chicken… feet, beak and all. He also preferred, to the consternation of others, to drink raw vegetable soup through a straw, avoiding solids.
JOSEP BROZ TITO
A perfect host, the former President of Yugoslavia Josep Broz Tito was known for his hospitality, but on a personal level, his favourite meal consisted of a slice of warm pig fat. However, it is believed that when he travelled on his Palace on Wheels ('Tito’s Blue Train') his preferred choice of meal was turkey, pasta and gorgonzola.
ANTONIO SALAZAR
The Portuguese autocrat was an extremely simple man who lunched on fish-bone soup and toast without butter. He also loved sardines since it reminded him of his impoverished childhood.
MUAMMAR GADDAFI
Gaddafi was famously flatulent on account of his love for camel milk. Apparently, Gaddafi was simple about his food and was happy with a meal of couscous with camel meat or lamb.
MAO ZEDONG
Mao Zedong was fairly simple. It's summed up in a statement he is once reported to have made to a comrade: “I eat a lot and I excrete a lot.” His love for meat was also well-known.
JOSEPH STALIN
Russian leader Joseph Stalin’s taste had a hint of bourgeois to it. One of his favourite dishes was Satsivi, a Georgian specialty, which is served as a starter and is extremely labour-intensive to prepare.
JEAN-BEDEL BOKASSA
One of Africa’s most brutal dictators, Jean-Bedel Bokassa, was a self-crowned emperor of Central African Republic. Accused of cannibalism, Bokassa was said to have once ordered his former cook to prepare a human corpse stuffed with rice and flambéed in gin.
